Marine habitat including butterfly perch and kina
The 1075 hectare marine reserve adjoining Ulva Island Open Sanctuary was established in 2004. The reserve protects all marine life within its boundaries, providing a safe haven and nursery for a wealth of underwater life, extending the protection of Stewart Island's/Rakiura’s largely pristine environment from land to sea. Nothing found within the reserve can be removed or harmed.

DOC is monitoring the changes in Te Wharawhara Marine Reserve. In this section you can review some of the results of this monitoring programme.
The marine reserve is surrounded by Te Waka a Te Wera / Paterson Inlet Mataitai Reserve. The mataitai reserve prohibits commercial fishing.
Scuba diving is a rewarding way to view the reserve and its inhabitants - but wear a wetsuit as the water can be very cold. Boat passengers and sea kayakers can also get a good view of the reserve.
