Review of the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement

The 1994 NZCPS has been reviewed, to determine what changes are needed in the light of experience with the existing statement and to respond to emerging issues in coastal resource management. As a result of this review the Proposed NZCPS 2008 has been prepared and is now open to public submissions.

Board of Inquiry

The Minister of Conservation has appointed a Board of Inquiry to inquire into and report on the Proposed NZCPS 2008. The Board is responsible for publicly notifying the proposed NZCPS and conducting a public submission and hearing process. It then reports to the Minister with any recommendations for change to the Proposed NZCPS. The Minister may, but need not, make changes to the Proposed NZCPS in response to the Board's recommendations.

The Board of Inquiry is chaired by Alternate Environment Court Judge Shonagh Kenderdine. Other members are Rikirangi Gage, Kathryn Edmonds, and Philip Woollaston.

Independent review

In 2002 the Minister of Conservation commissioned Dr Johanna Rosier of Massey University to undertake an independent review of the effectiveness of the NZCPS. Dr Rosier's report was published in 2004.
