Carter Scenic Reserve is one of the few remaining remnants of patchwork landscape once typical of the Wairarapa - grass, wetland, shrubland, and forest.
Lake Wairarapa, Lake Onoke and their associated wetlands and scattered forest remnants, located in the southern Wairararapa Plains, are the largest wetland system in the lower North Island.
