Tenure review statistics

As at 21 June 2007:

  • 58 leases (covering around 15 per cent of the eligible land as at 1998) have completed or all but completed tenure review
  • 130 other leases are currently in the process
  • 114 leases are not in the process
  • Two leases were purchased in their entirety by the Crown outside of tenure review, e.g. via the Nature Heritage Fund, namely Birchwood Station in Canterbury and Michael Peak Station in Otago.

Tenure review has resulted in about 176,000 ha (58 per cent) of land transacted being freeholded and about 127,000 ha (42 per cent) being returned to full Crown ownership as conservation land.

Adding in the Nature Heritage Fund purchases, the overall split between land transferred to conservation and land being freeholded is around 50/50.
