Pukenui Forest/Whau Valley Catchment

Pukenui Walkway - 9 km, 4 hrs return, access from Three Mile Bush Rd.
Existing tracks are generally unmarked and standards vary considerably.
Relatively low use of walkway and tracks.
Potential for links to Barge Park, Whangarei Museum, Millington Rd, and for guided walks.

Coronation Scenic Reserve

Five existing tracks, ranging from a 15 minute to a 2 hr walk. Frank Holman Memorial Track is narrow and steep in parts and may be slippery when wet. Walkers should be physically fit and appropriately dressed for all weather.

"Maunu" Reserve

Potential for track link to adjacent Pukenui Forest.

Barge Showgrounds

Current uses:

  • Equestrian - showjumping, dressage, pony club events, cross-country
  • Athletics - cross-country runs (in conjunction with adjacent Museum land)
  • One off events - eg. Wine & Food Festival, A & P Summer Show
  • Dog exercise area

Potential for further development, and as an entry area into Pukenui Forest and agreed parts of the Whau Valley catchment.

Water Supply Values

Whau Valley Dam commissioned in 1967. Earth structure. Supplies approximately 50-60% of the water to the City Water Supply Area including Whangarei Heads. Storage is 1.87 million m3. Potential for interpretation.
