Pukenui Forest - Ngahere O Pukenui

An ambitious project to ’heal’ the 1500 ha Western Hills and Pukenui forest on Whangarei’s western doorstep is being unfolded by Whangarei District Council and the Department of Conservation.

Pukenui Forest, the Whau Valley Catchment, Barge Showgrounds, Whangarei Quarry Gardens, and Coronation Scenic Reserve are a significant backdrop to the city of Whangarei. The areas contain high conservation values, are full of historic and cultural sites and provide a great range of  recreational opportunities. Yet the health of the forest is rapidly declining due to pest animals and weeds.
