Whio (blue duck)

Status: nationally endangered

Throughout New Zealand, whio numbers have been in decline, because of stoat predation of nesting females and eggs.

At the Wangapeka/Fyfe, Oparara/Ugly and Arthur/Clinton/Cleddau river sites, numbers have increased from 16 pairs in the last three years to 49 pairs.
