Orange-fronted parakeet (kākāriki karaka)

Status: critically endangered

The kākāriki karaka is now restricted to the Hawdon-Poulter and Hurunui sites, with an estimated total population of 150-300.

A hole-nesting bird and ground feeder, this parakeet is more vulnerable than others to rats and stoats.

The species was severely affected by the 2000-2001 rat plague and has not yet recovered. But populations established on Chalky and Maud Islands are now self sustaining.
