Mohua (yellowhead)

Status: nationally endangered

Once a common songbird in South Island beech forests, this striking, yellow-and-brown hole-nesting bird is restricted today to a few isolated South Island and offshore island sites.

It is present at eight Operation Ark sites, with good population recovery recorded at the Landsborough, Dart-Caples and Catlins site.

Mohua

Stoat control in the Landsborough valley has led to a steady increase in mohua call counts, a solid indication of population recovery.
