Stakeholders and budget

Kiwi release
Ngai Tuhoe iwi are the principal stakeholders in Te Urewera Mainland Island. Tuhoe are inextricably connected to Te Urewera. The future of the project will rest on the partnership between Tuhoe and the Department of Conservation.
Local environmental agencies or groups, namely the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (Environment Bay of Plenty) and the Eastern Bay branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society have provided significant support for the project.
Eight full time staff in Whakatane have direct involvement in the project. Support is provided by administrative staff in the Te Urewera Area Office, and technical staff in the East Coast Bay of Plenty Conservancy Office and the Research and Development Group of the Department of Conservation.
