Conservation achievements

Native flora and fauna

  • Threatened species, including kereru and kaka, along with most common forest birds, are benefiting from pest control. Five minute bird counts indicate that kereru increased 2.6-fold between 1997 and 2001 at Otamatuna.

  • Kokako numbers have increased dramatically. In 1994, only 8 pairs were found in the Otamatuna Study Area. After 9 years of intensive pest control, the number of kokako pairs soared to over 90. Kokako have also been successfully transferred to other mainland island projetcs to build populations in other areas, such as Boundary Stream, near Napier and Ngapukeriki, east of Opotiki.
  • Approximately 100 pairs of kiwi are found within the stoat trapping area.

Threats

  • Over 3500 stoats have been trapped since the project began in 1996.
  • Stoat trapping has expanded from an initial 1100 hectares in 1996/97 to current control of 6500 hectares at Otamatuna/Mangaone.
  • 500 deer have been shot in the Otamatuna Deer Control Area since 1997.
  • An estimated 330,000 possums have been killed since 1996.
  • Over 40,000 rats have been killed since rat trapping began in 2000 in the Otamatuna/Mangaone core areas.

Vegetation

  • Red mistletoe (pirirangi) has increased dramatically at Otamatuna, with the number of known plants increasing from 10 to 81 in 2001.
  • Two other mistletoe species (scarlet and yellow) have subsequently been discovered within northern Te Urewera.
  • Foliar browse index monitoring in the background area and at Otamatuna indicates that the condition of the forest canopy is improving.
  • Seedling monitoring lines in the deer control area at Otamatuna indicates that significant regeneration of deer palatable understory is occurring.
