Threats

Possum in a tree at Boundary Stream
New Zealand's unique flora and fauna have been threatened since the arrival of humans.
Some particularly troublesome pests at Boundary Stream are:
- possums - eat native tree species, ferns and grasses and prey on native birds and their eggs, and invertebrates like wetas and beetles
- mustelids - that's stoats, weasels and ferrets
- rodents - Norway and ship rats and mice
- hedgehogs - up to 4,500 hedgehogs eat an estimated 660 kilograms of invertebrates each autumn night at Boundary Stream (that's about 146gms or two to three weta per hedgehog each night)
- goats
- cats
- pigs
- deer
