Possum in a tree at Boundary Stream

New Zealand's unique flora and fauna have been threatened since the arrival of humans.

Some particularly troublesome pests at Boundary Stream are:

  • possums - eat native tree species, ferns and grasses and prey on native birds and their eggs, and invertebrates like wetas and beetles
  • mustelids - that's stoats, weasels and ferrets
  • rodents - Norway and ship rats and mice
  • hedgehogs - up to 4,500 hedgehogs eat an estimated 660 kilograms of invertebrates each autumn night at Boundary Stream (that's about 146gms or two to three weta per hedgehog each night)
  • goats
  • cats
  • pigs
  • deer
