Help safeguard riverbed plants

Braided rivers are home to some of New Zealand's unique and threatened plants. Your actions can help ensure their survival.

Please:

If driving in a river bed is unavoidable,
    please keep to marked tracks

  • Avoid driving any vehicle on riverbeds - park on the bank and walk to your destination. Vehicles damage fragile plants which may take years to recover. Vehicles also spread weed seeds into riverbeds, carried in tyre treads.
  • If driving on a riverbed is unavoidable, please stay on formed tracks.
  • Obtain any necessary resource consents from regional councils for riverbed works.
  • Talk with Department of Conservation staff about how you can minimise the impact of your activities on riverbed plants.
  • Above all, respect braided riverbeds. The plants and animals that live there need your help to survive.
