At Denniston, premium coal was mined from a lonely landscape in the clouds. Today you can visit the dramatic location of one of New Zealand's most significant industrial sites.

Getting there

Denniston is a 25 minute drive on sealed roads north of Westport.

Denniston

Denniston was the main township of a collection of mining towns built to service the nearby coal mines. It offers magnificent views down to the coastal plains of the Karamea Bight and the mouth of the Waimangaroa River.
