DOC's work at Cape Reinga
On 5 March 2009, a blessing ceremony marked the completion of the $6 million upgrade of the Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) visitor facilities, which began in 2007.
The project was a result of a close working relationship built up over the years between DOC and local iwi and kaitiaki (guardians) of the area, Ngati Kuri.

Waharoa (gateway) or portico
The changes at Te Rerenga Wairua give visitors a greater appreciation of the mystery and spirituality of the whole area including
- A concrete portico or waharoa (the gateway) leads to the beginning of the new walking track
- A 600-metre red chip sealed track from the carparks to the lighthouse
- Sealed car parks
- New environmentally friendly toilets, adjacent to the carparks
- Interpretation signage at key spots
- Extensive native plantings
