Recent work

Since 2003 nearly $500,000 has been invested in restoring parts of the North Head site. Three large restoration projects include the 1885 summit barracks building and the north and south batteries (large underground gun emplacements).

The sole remaining gun, an 8" 1886 Armstrong 'disappearing' gun, located at the south battery, has been restored and returned to ceremonial firing condition.

The 1885 stone kitchen has been converted to a theatre where a film on the history of North Head is shown. This is open to the public seven days a week, 8.30am - 4pm.

A history centre is planned for the summit barracks.
