Aerial view of Mangere Mountain. See the numbers below for an explanation of the features.
- At this point you are walking though a breach where a lava lake broke out of the confines of the crater. Chunks of the crater rim were rafted away through this outlet.
- The main walking route follows the crater rim.
- Searing hot gases jetted from these fire pits, scattering frothy scoria high and wide.
- This dome was originally a vent which plugged up. Pressure from below, like a burp, pushed the still malleable lava into this 12m mound.
- The main crater is massive and makes the mountain almost hollow. Most of the spasmodic activity occurred within the crater.
- The last major event on the mountain before it quietened down was the explosion and energetic fountaining from this secondary crater.
Lava bombs are splatters of lava shaped by their flight and landing. They are named after everyday objects of a similar shape, such as corkscrews and cowpats, and vary from coin to car size. Lava bombs are most often found littering the crater floor.
