Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) is a national programme of experiential learning about marine conservation. The programme is under the auspices of the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust.
In July 2004, DOC and the Kaumatua of Te Uri O Hikihiki proposed that a marine reserve be established at Mimiwhangata. In January 2006, the Minister of Conservation and Minister of Fisheries announced the Marine Protected Areas Policy. The Mimiwhangata marine reserve proposal has now been folded into this process. The purpose of this document was to inform the community and to ask for consideration, comment and participation.
