Conservation boards
Conservation Boards share in a vision to protect our flora and fauna. They represent the public interest in conservation within their region.

Conservation board nominations are open

The Minister of Conservation is seeking nominations for membership of Conservation Boards in 2026. The number of public vacancies on each board is as follows:

Te Hiku o te Ika (2), Northland (2), Auckland (1), Waikato (3), Bay of Plenty (3), East Coast Hawke’s Bay (2), Tongariro Taupō (2), Taranaki Whanganui (2), Wellington (2), Chatham Islands (1), Nelson/Marlborough (3), West Coast Tai Poutini (4), Canterbury Aoraki (3), Otago (3), Southland (3)

We are seeking nominations from those with experience, expertise and links with the local community.

Nominees may have knowledge of nature conservation, kaitiakitanga, natural earth and marine sciences, mātauranga Māori, cultural heritage, tikanga, ta ao Māori, recreation, tourism, the interests of the local community, and features of conservation land in the area.

Any person can apply to be a conservation board member. Nominations close Friday 30 January 2026.
