The Wairarapa Area extends from east of the Rimutaka and Tararua Forest Parks to the rugged eastern coastline, and from Palliser Bay in the south to Cape Turnagain in the north.

Conservation and recreation areas managed by the Wairarapa Area include the Aorangi Range, the eastern Tararua and Rimutaka Ranges, the Lake Wairarapa wetlands,the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, Castlepoint Scenic Reserve, and numerous other reserves protecting ecological, geological, archaeological and recreation values.
