The Manawatū Rangitīkei Area Office manages conservation land on the coast from the Turakina River to Forest Lakes just north of Otaki, inland to Woodville and up to just north of Taihape.
It includes the 100 km long Ruahine Forest Park, which offers significant recreational opportunities with more than 50 huts and 400 km of track. The many lowland forest reserves in the area also offer walking opportunities, the most popular being the Manawatu Gorge Track.
Several reserves and walks can be found near to State Highway 1, which bisects the Area. Manawatū Rangitīkei Area has a Field Centre at Mangaweka.
