Wellington Harbour
The Kapiti Wellington Area is bounded by Cook Strait in the south and extends northwards to the Otaki River, encompassing Wellington, Hutt Valley, the Kapiti coast, and the western sides of the Rimutaka and Tararua Forest Parks.
Conservation and recreation sites managed by the Kapiti Wellington Area include some of Wellington city's distinguished old buildings - Old Government Building, Turnbull House and the Dominion Observatory - as well as Matiu/Somes Island in Wellington Harbour, Taputeranga Marine Reserve on Wellington's south coast, Catchpool and Orongorongo Valleys in the Rimutaka Forest Park, the earthquake-raised beaches at Turakirae Head, the Kapiti Island Nature Reserve, Mana Island Scientific Reserve and Kapiti Marine Reserve.
Estuaries, wetlands and associated dunelands, coastal and wetland forest remnants, a native land snail, and archaeological sites are also protected and managed by DOC in the northern part of the Kapiti Wellington Area.
The Kapiti Wellington Area also provides administration for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
