Most of the 84,246ha of public conservation land managed by the Hauraki Area Office is on the Coromandel Peninsula. As well as the area office in Thames, the Hauraki area also has:
- A visitor centre in the Kauaeranga Valley providing information and interpretation displays
- Field bases at Coromandel, Kauaeranga Valley and Whitianga
Features of the area managed by DOC include:
- Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) Marine Reserve
- Sixteen islands
- Historic sites such as Broken Hills (gold mining) and Coromandel Forest Park (kauri logging)
- 18 campgrounds, including 5 coastal campgrounds in the north of the Peninsula
- Pinnacles Hut (the largest DOC hut in the country)
