Northland Conservancy administers about 168,000 hectares of land in the region, fragmented into more than 500 discrete units.

For management purposes, the conservancy is divided into four areas, each with its own office and staff. The conservancy headquarters is in Whangarei.

Northland Conservancy is shifting the area boundaries between the Whangarei and Kauri Coast Area offices as of 1 July 2011. Find out why, and what area of public conservation land is affected by the change.

Most of the conservancy's public conservation land is in mature regenerating native forest with large areas of shrubland and dunelands. The ecological well-being of these habitats varies. All have suffered to some extent from previous fire or logging, while introduced browsers (possums and goats) and predators (rodents, mustelids, cats and dogs) inflict continuing damage to indigenous flora and fauna.

Despite this, ecosystems such as Waipoua, Puketi and Te Paki are still of outstanding quality, and are nationally significant for their biodiversity, species endemism and as habitats for species.

There are also a number of offshore islands which are pest free and are home to species which have evolved in isolation or are no longer found on the mainland.
