The Canterbury Conservancy manages approximately 808,000 hectares of public conservation land. This includes alpine vegetation, tussock grassland, beech and podocarp forest, braided rivers, lakes, vast coastal wetlands, inland salt pans, geothermal areas and enclosed bay shorelines, supporting both common and threatened species of animals and plants.

For management purposes, the conservancy is divided into five areas, each with its own office and staff. The conservancy headquarters is in Christchurch.


Public conservation land

Land managed by the conservancy includes two national parks:

  • Arthur's Pass (87,590 ha managed by Canterbury)
  • Aoraki/Mt Cook (72,099 ha)

Canterbury has eight forest / conservation parks:

  • Craigieburn
  • Hanmer Forest
  • Korowai / Torlesse Tussocklands Park
  • Lake Sumner
  • Ahuriri
  • Ruataniwha
  • Hakatere
  • Te Kahui Kaupeka

There are numerous other reserves and conservation areas within Canterbury's borders. In addition a significant amount of private land is protected under covenants.

Budget

Canterbury Conservancy operates on an annual budget of $11.44 million, partly funded from other sources besides the Crown, for example concessions, leases, rentals, sales and sponsorships.

Concessions

There are about 1000 concessions for activities on land administered by DOC ranging from grazing, guided hunting, climbing, fishing and tramping, to accommodation, telecommunications, marine mammal permits and aircraft activities.

Eight of Canterbury's thirteen commercial and club ski-fields are on land managed by DOC.

Canterbury has 120 permanent full and part-time staff and up to 70 temporary and seasonal staff.
