The following tables show the number of people who walked the Great Walks and number of nights they stayed.

Data for the Milford, Routeburn, Kepler, Abel Tasman Coast, Lake Waikaremoana and Heaphy Tracks are obtained from the National Visitor Booking System. Data for all other tracks are from locally maintained booking systems. Cancellations are excluded.

Notes

  1. With the exception of Rakiura (see note 3), 'independent visitors' represents the number of individuals staying at least one night who did not walk with a guided group. 'Total visitors' represents the number of individuals, independent and guided, who stayed at least one night on these walks. With the exception of the Milford it does not imply that they walked the entire length of the walk.
  2. 'Bednights' is the number of nights spent by visitors in booked huts or campgrounds on the walk.
  3. Circuit walkers only. (The 2006/7 data for total walkers spending at least one night on the track is incomplete, although it is known that there was a total of 4633 bednights booked for the track.)
  4. Estimate.
  5. Provisional.
  6. Milford and Routeburn revision: guided walker numbers are no longer available and are estimated from previous years' returns.
  7. Figures for the Routeburn published by Southland Conservancy prior to 2006 only included data for the Southland end of the track.
