Fiordland Surface Water Activity annual programme 2011/2012

DOC carries out research in the Fiordland Marine Area. The following research activities are planned for 2011/2012 on DOC vessels in Fiordland:

Fiordland bottlenose dolphin population monitoring Doubtful Sound complex and Dusky/Breaksea complex

Dive survey at Pigeon Island.
Dive survey at Pigeon Island

  • July/August 2011, October/November 2011, February/March 2012 (approximately 25 days in each period spread between both locations).
  • Photo-identification surveys of the Doubtful and Dusky/Breaksea bottlenose dolphin populations to monitor abundance and calf survival rates.

Fiordland joint-agency Undaria response - Breaksea Sound

  • 1-2 monthly surveys in Breaksea Sound, from July 2011 to June 2012 (approximately 5 days per survey).
  • Surveillance and removal of the pest seaweed Undaria.
