SPREP - Pacific Regional Environmental Programme

The Pacific Regional Environmental Programme (SPREP - formally known as the South Pacific Regional Environmental Programme) co-ordinates regional environmental programmes and is the Pacific’s major intergovernmental organisation charged with protecting and managing the environment and natural resources.

SPREP’s mandate is to promote cooperation in the Pacific region and to provide assistance in order to protect and improve the environment and to ensure sustainable development for present and future generations.

SPREP has 21 Pacific island members and four countries with direct interests in the region, who provide governance to the programme.

The SPREP Secretariat is based in Apia, Samoa.

The Department of Conservation is the technical focal point for New Zealand and a representative attends intergovernmental meetings. The Department also has an agreement to cover assistance with short-term projects and training.
