Weka
Lake Wānaka
The reintroduction of buff weka to Otago is the restoration of a Ngāi Tahu taoka tuka iho (treasured asset of the past).
Media releases about the project:
Buff weka returned to Te Waipounamu (Ngāi Tahu article on NZine website) Ngāi Tahu to re-establish buff weka on mainland (Ngāi Tahu website)
Buff weka released to start breeding (Otago Daily Times website)
Buff weka post release results (Ngāi Tahu website)
Buff weka used to roam the Otago and Canterbury high country but sadly, thanks to introduced predators, that's no longer the case. Now the islands of Lake Wānaka provide them with a refuge.
