The Acheron Road through Molesworth Station is to re-open next Monday (23 February 2009) after heavy rainfall reduced the fire danger in the area.
The road through the historic high country station in South Marlborough was closed to the public on 2 February because of high fire risk.
The Department of Conservation, which manages Molesworth, says it will continue to closely monitor the fire risk in the station to determine if the road can stay open up until its scheduled closure for the season at the beginning of April.
People planning to make the road can trip can check whether it is currently open or closed by calling the DOC South Marlborough Area Office, phone +64 3 572 9100, or by asking at visitor centres in the region.
The 59-kilometre Acheron Road through Molesworth Station opens to the public each year between 28 December and early April, weather and road conditions permitting.
