Curious to find out more about the spectacular Waipoua and Waima areas? A new report just published by the Department of Conservation (DOC) may be the answer!

Anyone interested in the natural features of the Tutamoe Ecological District can use the report to update their existing knowledge or learn more about its natural features, says DOC spokesperson, Wendy Holland.

Natural areas of Tutamoe Ecological
District

"The District includes the largest native forest tract north of Auckland - the Waipoua, Mataraua and Waima Forest continuum - so that's an outstanding natural feature in itself. These forests are home to a multitude of nationally and regionally threatened plants and animals. The District also includes Northland's highest point, Te Raupua and the magnificent Waipoua coast running from Maunganui Bluff north to South Hokianga Head."

Original survey work for the report was undertaken 14 years ago however recent aerial photography has been used to represent the sites identified in 1994.

This report provides significant information for landowners, iwi, environmental groups, local authorities and other groups with environmental management interests and responsibilities, Ms Holland says.

"This type of work has been ongoing around Northland since 1994 and is gradually nearing completion to cover the whole region."

The report is available from the Northland Conservancy office in Whangarei and will be available online shortly.
