Fire closes 42 Traverse Track
Date: 07 February 2008
A fire burning in the Tongariro Forest Conservation Area, north of Tongariro National Park has closed the popular 42 Traverse track.
"The Department of Conservation was alerted about 10.00pm last night to a fire burning east of Owhango Township. We have a ground crew, two helicopters and a Cresco currently working to contain the fire, which is burning in a small area of the Tongariro Forest Conservation Area" said DOC spokesperson Amy England.
"We have closed the 42 Traverse to all users due to the close proximity to the fire. We will continue to monitor the situation and re-assess the track closure at the end of today. Until then we request that the public stay out of the area until advised otherwise" said Miss England
The fire is burning in one of five national kiwi sanctuaries where a long term study of kiwi survivorship is being carried out. Work in the kiwi sanctuary is on hold until the fire can be contained. DOC's Ruapehu Area Manager Kevin Cannell says "Naturally we are concerned about the damage this fire could do if it continues to spread, so we are putting all our resources into managing this fire. Our fire team were deployed late last night when we received the first report of the fire".
The Ruapehu Area fire team were about to be deployed to Pipiriki to assist with fires burning in the Whanganui National Park when they were alerted to a fire in their own area. They are now being supported by fire crew from Turangi.
Miss England notes "It is so dry throughout the country right now, we are not the only area who is having to battle with fires. We urge the public to observe the fire bans throughout the region. Be aware of your actions, sparks from machinery, cigarette butts and outdoor BBQ's can all be enough to spark a blaze. Call 111 if you see any signs of smoke or fire".
