Emergency track closure
Date: 04 August 2008
The Bridge to Nowhere walking track is closed due to a major slip on the swing bridge at Morgans Bluff.
An inspection by a DOC structural engineer was carried out on Tuesday which determined the closure of the facility. Structural damage was evident in the main support posts on the far side of the bridge which were cracked leaving the bridge buckled and unsafe.
The closure of this bridge cuts off the main track from the Whanganui River to the iconic Bridge to Nowhere which was built in the 1930's to provide access to the valley farms known as the Mangapurua Valley Soldiers Settlement.
DOC Visitor Assets Programme Manager, George Taylor said "We advise the public to steer clear of the unsafe structure until further notice. We will endeavour to fix the structure as soon as possible because of the restricted access to one of Whanganui National Parks most popular sites.
