Climate change for DOC - questions and answers - Who are the big players in the world’s climate?

Who are the big players in the world’s climate?

Developed countries produce 60% of global emissions. This will drop to 40% as the developing countries continue to grow, the OECD has predicted.

The largest developed-country emitters are the US, Japan and member States of the European Union, as well as the fastest-growing, populous developing countries such as China, India, Indoensia, Brazil and Mexico.

Including the oil and coal producing and exporting countries in this group would appear to be double counting. You can only burn fossil fuels once. But the extraction of oil, e.g. by flaring gas, produces emissions as well and this makes of the Middle East a not insignificant player.
