How the guidelines are implemented

No collection of animals from wild populations

Collection of animals from wild populations for advocacy displays is not supported under the captive management policy. Applications need to demonstrate that stocks are derived from existing, permitted collections.

Moving animals out of natural geographic range

Provided applications demonstrate security of captive stocks and prevention of risk of escape into wild locations, there isn't an issue in relation to advocacy-based applications seeking animals from captive stocks in facilities away from their natural geographic range. For example, animals can potentially be moved from South Island to North Island facilities for advocacy purposes.

Required information

Applications must include material addressing captive management programme outline, husbandry manual and advocacy plan in line with the timeframes given in the guidelines.

Benefits to whole genetic population

Applications should identify how the particular animals are being handled in the context of the whole captive population to maximise genetic fitness etc over time.

Links to sector bodies

We would prefer applicants to be linked to parent bodies such as CMAG:ARAZPA NZ as this ensures industry best practice is likely to be applied and monitoring will be undertaken.
