The application process

Prepare your application

Institution prepares application for 'authority to hold'.

The application must be accompanied by:

Submit your application

Send to Conservator of relevant Department of Conservation conservancy (the conservancy in the geographic area which the collection will be held in).

DOC asseses application

The relevant DOC office:

  • checks all documentation is provided
  • inspects institution
  • seeks CMAG: ARAZPA NZ comment where appropriate
  • advises applicant CMAG: ARAZPA NZ advice is sought
  • considers application
  • makes recommendation to Conservator with any recommended permit conditions

Application satisfies DOC criteria

  • Conservator approves application.
  • DOC advises applicant of successful application and issues permit with relevant conditions.

Application does not satisfy DOC criteria

  • Conservator forms preliminary view to decline application.
  • Conservator notifies applicant of preliminary view (with reasons) for application failure within 20 working days and invites applicant to state why preliminary view should not be confirmed.
  • This statement is considered following the above process.
