How business can benefit

Private enterprise and the local community have an important role to play in realising the full potential of public conservation land. The development of business initiatives such as ecotourism ventures, guided walks and organised events is essential to creating a marketable product and generating local economic benefit.

DOC wants to enable business opportunities that are consistent with conservation, with a particular focus on increasing the number of people enjoying public conservation areas.

Stepping stones to success

There is potential for local business to benefit from the work that DOC has been doing in the northern Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park to upgrade visitor facilities. This work is aimed at creating the Kaimai Heritage Trail to showcase the iconic and nationally important historic sites and increase visitor numbers to the area.

Some ideas for tourism based businesses:

  • Themed guiding - plants, animals, mining history, Māori history or a mixture of everything!
  • Pick-ups/drop-offs at track ends
  • Historic re-enactments
  • Luxury guided walks - provide transport of packs and gourmet food
  • Vehicle movement service between track ends
  • Hunting & fishing guides
  • Horse-riding guides
