'Conservation revealed - unique New Zealand in detail' is a comprehensive collection of detailed and interesting factsheets.
This resource is designed to assist concessionaires in providing their clients with richer experiences. The Department of Conservation has developed this interpretation resource kit with funding from the Ministry of Tourism.
What is it exactly?

The kit is based on the success of similar programmes developed in various Australian states and locally by the DOC Southland office.
The kit is comprised of:
- Interpretation handbook - providing guidance on best practice in interpretation.
- 150 colour factsheets summarising some of New Zealand's natural and cultural features and species.
The factsheets can be viewed and downloaded from this website or purchased on a CD containing high resolution copies.

Business benefits
Use of these resources will provide tourism concessionaires and their employees with the skills and tools to be more able to provide enriching experiences for visitors to New Zealand while also:
- minimising the impact of visitors on the environment
- developing the interpretive skills of tour guides, operators, activity leaders and customer service staff
- increasing visitor awareness of conservation issues and minimum impact measures
- improving visitor's understanding and appreciation for New Zealand's unique flora, fauna, culture and history
- accessing national and local DOC factsheets and web resources
- promoting closer working relations between DOC, TMT and concessionaires.
DOC and interpretation
Interpretation is fundamental to the department fostering understanding and engagement in conservation. DOC is working to ensure that professional, accurate, high quality interpretation is developed and delivered consistently, both by DOC staff and other stakeholders.
